Burwood Brickworks is the world’s most Sustainable Shopping Centre & first retail development in the world, to achieve “Living Building Challenge” Certification – the most advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment. The much-anticipated Burwood Brickworks Shopping Centre opened December 2019.

Our team collaborated with Frasers Property and Hacer Group, delivering multiple elements across the site, consisting of 1700sqm of original aboriginal ceiling artworks, 2x bespoke canopy features to the rooftop, and retail and precinct signage.

The aboriginal ceiling artwork “super graphic” span 9 sections of sawtooth ceiling in the retail mall area totalling 1700sqm. Each individual section of the graphic has been created to align to the overall vision for the artwork and is compliant with the Living Building Challenge guidelines.

The architectural feature ribbons on the on the north and south elevations at Burwood Brickworks weave in and out of the precast façade and span over 100 meters comprising of over 100 individual fabricated aluminium panels. Designed by NH Architecture, our studio was engaged to resolve the design, manufacture and implement the bespoke features. 3D modelling and design development were critical to the success of the project ensuring that all materials, structures and mounting points were resolved throughout the design process. The survey of critical connection points for the steel support structure and extension arms was completed during the documentation phase to ensure alignment of the built forms. Along with these two structures, the design and delivery of over 190+ fabricated canopy panels that clad the existing canopy structure by Hacer Group were also implemented.

The 10 metre high pylons have been built to integrate custom perforated panels around an internal steel framework. This allows the entire sign to glow and contrast the illuminated Burwood Brickworks brand and tenant logos. The use of Illuminated day/night Perspex letters produces the appearance of dark graphics during the day and white graphics at night. The use of the mesh also provides a solid background during the day but allows the logos to float when illuminated. This contrast of materials and illumination provides a complete transformation of the signage in the evenings.
