‘Upstairs’ is a lifestyle entertainment and dining precinct developed by Mirvac on top of the existing Toombul Shopping Centre.
The Design Objective
Our role was to harnesses a new identity through the concept of the ‘vibrant warehouse,’ building on key design themes and principles from the architecture, branding and landscape design.
The Design Brief
Evoke the feel of a urban laneway precinct focused on entertainment and dining (unique to Toombul)
A place to be discovered (rather than advertised)
The signage should blend art and wayfinding
Help set the precinct clearly apart from the shopping centre below.
Not look like any signage seen in other shopping centres
Appeal to a new generation of Toombul locals (20-30yo’s with disposable income, who wants the city experience in the suburb)
Key design principles
Life as a Stage
As a place of live performances we were encouraged to explore theatrics and playfulness of design with both form and finishes.
Create an Attraction
Invite people into the precinct with a visually strong and welcoming structures. This element would catch the eye and create a sculptural element to draw you in and identify the new precinct. It would also tie the wayfinding together and create a strong identity for the signage family.
Room to Move
The goal was to ensure clear and easy to navigate routes while also allowing a variety of experiences. Allow for secondary pathways within the varied retail and food and beverage zones, whilst maintaining intimate interactions.
Urban Play
Reinforcing a sense of drama, scale and mood by creating a warehouse like atmosphere in the existing double level space.
Our unique design exudes the urban warehouse. Exhibiting a sense of flair, whilst maintaining the industrial heartbeat. The forms are built to suit the scale and drama of the spaces and evoke a sense of fun and playfulness throughout the journey. Visitors experience strategically placed information from the carpark to the engagement with the various dining and entertainment offerings. Each experience is both dramatic and informative.
The overall result is a bright playful and bold addition to the precinct. The design harmonises with the environment providing each user with the information they need, at just the right point in time.
